HEALTH AND MEDICAL CARE FOR NON-EU CITIZENS

How does the Health Care cover work for non-EU researchers and their family?

The Health Care options for non EU-citizens staying in Italy are divided into two beneficiary categories:

1- Foreign enrolled with the SSN

Engagement in work activity or placing one’s name on the employment registers involves an obligation on the part of a foreign citizen (non-EU) lawfully present in Italy to enrol with the SSN, quite apart from whether the residence permit has been issued for subordinate or autonomous work;

2- Foreigners lawfully in Italy who are not amongst those who are obliged to enrol with the SNN

Foreign citizens (non-EU) lawfully present in Italy who are not amongst those who are obliged to enrol with the SNN (for example study or short business stays) must take out insurance against the risk of illness, accidents and maternity, through the signing of a special insurance policy with an Italian or foreign insurance company that is valid in Italy or through the voluntary enrolment with the Italian National Health Service (SSN), which is conditional upon the payment of an annual forfeit payment and is also extended to dependent relatives
