HEALTH AND MEDICAL CARE FOR EU CITIZENS

How does the Health Care cover work for non-EU researchers and their family?

From March 2004 the European Health Insurance Card, which simplifies the procedure for EU citizens in receiving first aid and medical assistance when moving to another European country, has gradually been introduced in the European Economic Area (i.e. the European Union, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein and Switzerland) replacing the previous Forms E111/E128.At present the situation is that the Card is being gradually implemented in all European countries: therefore, it is recommended, especially for those who have not received their Card yet, to contact their local Health Care Authority before their departure and ask for the documentation required to obtain medical assistance in the European country they are moving to.

In any case, for EU researchers that come to Italy to work it is compulsory, once they arrive in Italy,to register with the Italian National Health Service (SSN) to benefit from the same services as Italian citizens (protection in the case of sickness, accident or pregnancy).
