VISA, ENTRY AND RESIDENT PERMITS, WORK PERMITS FOR NON EU RESEARCHERS

Which are the entry requirements in Italy for non-EU researchers?

The VISA represents the authorization to enter in Italy and must be
personally required by researchers at the Italian Diplomatic Offices (Embassy or Italian Consulate) of their country of fixed residence that will provide them with a comprehensive list of necessary documents needed in order to obtain the document. It is important for researchers to contact the inviting/hosting organization before applying for the VISAbecausethe requirements and the type ofVISA may vary depending on the reason and length of stay and on the financial means of support accessible to the researcher. For this reason, it is advisable to start the VISA procedure well in advance, at least three months before the intended start of the research activities in Italy.

If non-EU researchers come to Italy under a work contract, in order to apply for a VISA they must generally present at the Italian Diplomatic Office the following documents which are, of course, formerly provided to them by the hosting organisation: the employment contract, the authorization to work in Italy (delivered by the local employment authority called Sportello Unico or Direzione Provinciale del Lavoro) and the invitation letter of the hosting organisation in which the financial means and the availability of accommodation for the period they intend to stay in Italy must be stated and certified.

Researchers must be aware of the fact that apart from the above documentation additional documents might be required by the Italian Diplomatic Offices or Consulates and that the production of the requested documentation does not necessary imply the automatic release of the VISA document.

It is compulsory for all foreign citizens, once they are in Italy, to personally apply for the Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) at the local Italian Police Office: the Residence Permitmust show the same length and the same purpose indicated on the VISA.
